What is Alternative Medicine?

]]>

The term “alternative” medicine is a far-reaching one that describes a number of health and healing methods. Generally, when using “alternative” you are talking about medicinal and general health practices, products, etc. that are not a part of society’s conventional medical systems. Sometimes referred to as “complementary” medicine when used in addition to, as opposed to instead of, conventional systems, the term can cover everything from folk medicine to faith healing to therapeutic massage. In other words, if you can’t learn it in medical schools or get it in conventional hospitals, it’s considered “alternative.”

Because so many different approaches to health and wellness are lumped under the alternative heading, it can be difficult to decide whether or not to take any of them seriously. Fad diets, homeopathy, acupuncture, herbology, yoga, probiotics and new age healing are just a few of the choices that fall under alternative medicine. But how are you supposed to know what is real from what is quackery?

There are many sources that attempt to back alternative medicine practices with scientific study. A quick search through the library or Internet will result in lots of studies and first-hand experiences that prove or disprove the worth of just about any alternative method you can name. Ask friends and family if they have tried a particular treatment or practice, you’ll be surprised how many people go outside of conventional medicine for alternate therapies. Many of us already use alternative medicine without even realizing it.

]]>

Remember when grandma insisted on her special chicken soup when you were sick, or a friend recommended an egg yolk mask for acne just because that’s what her mom did?

Those are great examples of alternative medicine, and there’s plenty of research out there that shows them to have real world value. Chicken soup is easy to eat when you’re sick and provides necessary hydration, vitamins, minerals, and protein to help you recover. The high protein in egg yolks soothes and enriches the skin, as it dries it pulls out impurities, and all without adding oils or over drying. Just because a medical doctor didn’t prescribe them doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t work.

Some alternative medicines have become more accepted by the conventional medical community. Acupuncture, part of traditional Chinese medicine, has been practiced for thousands of years and is considered conventional in many Asian countries. However, acupuncture is accepted only for pain management in the US. Acupuncturists claim it can help everything from weight loss to infertility, but this has not been definitively proven in scientific study. Practitioners in the US are highly trained and must get a license before treating patients. Licenses aren’t infallible, but it does lend extra assurance that a professional with high standards is treating you. Further proof of acceptance is that many insurance companies will cover treatment by a licensed acupuncturist.

It is still important to take care when choosing to use alternative medicine. Be sure and do your homework. While it may not hurt to put egg on your face, taking herbs without knowing how they may interact with other medicines or knowing proper dosages can cause serious problems. Going to an unlicensed practitioner for something like acupuncture can result in serious injury. You should consult with your present health practitioner to discuss the alternative medicines you are considering. Be sure to weigh the risks and benefits carefully before trying anything new. Always let each health professional know all of your medical history and present practices.

Many people find great results from alternative and complementary medicine. When you explore these “new” options, you may find that there are centuries old ways to take care of your body and mind that have been overlooked by today’s western medicine. Careful research and a mindful approach can help you achieve a better lifestyle and enjoy good health.

Toronto. May 28, 2010. Despite the dramatic improvements in the extent and quality of our lives, largely owing to modern medicine, our current health care system has fostered a backlash, manifested in part by the emergence of non-science-based “alternative” health care practices . This trend has driven a need for dialogue on how best we should balance evidence-based decisions against demands for consumer choice – regardless of the science. In this presentation, Scott Gavura discusses how health care decision-making differs from all other goods and services, and how this impacts on the choices we make, both as individuals, and in aggregate. Through an interactive discussion, he facilitates a dialogue on the opportunities for science advocates to effect positive change in health at the patient- and population-level. Scott Gavura , BScPhm, MBA is passionate about improving the use of medications. As a pharmacist working in the Ontario cancer system, he scrutinizes and manages how very expensive cancer drugs are used. He also founded the Science-Based Pharmacy blog, to begin a discussion within and about the pharmacy profession’s role in supporting science-based care. Scott has a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree and a Masters of Business Administration degree from the University of Toronto, and has completed a Accredited Canadian Hospital Pharmacy. Alternative Medicine

]]>

Alternative medicine is something that we’ve heard a lot about. It’s been in use for quite a long time. Celebrities use it, rock stars use it, yogis use it, and now you can use it too. So what is alternative medicine all about? Read along to find out more.

Theoretically, it is any form of healing practice that is not included in the scientific framework of conventional western medicine. Alternative medicines encompass different medicinal therapies with a cultural or historical basis rather than a scientific one. Quite often it is grouped with the complementary medicines. Complementary medicine commonly refers to these same interventions only when it is used with the mainstream techniques. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicines (NCCAM) in United States enlists chiropractic medicine, traditional Chinese medicines, herbalism, naturopathy, yoga, meditation, Ayurveda, homeopathy, acupuncture, hypnosis, nutritional-based therapies, and biofeedback with a host of other practice under alternative medicines.

This stream of therapeutic practices arises out of diverse foundations and drastically varies in the methodologies. Traditional medicine, spiritual beliefs, folk knowledge or some recently conceived therapies are normally the foundation of alternative practices. Countries where such alternative medicinal practices are quite widespread tend to regulate and license them. The medical fraternity generally does not accept the claims of these practitioners as either an evidence-based assessment of efficacy and safety hasn’t been performed or is unavailable.

If any scientific investigation successfully reveals the effectiveness and safety of any alternative practice, subsequently it is incorporated in the mainstream medicinal field and no longer remains an “alternative”. The practice and the regulations vary in different countries. For example, in Canada massage is considered to be a conventional medicine unlike United States and is highly regulated.

NCCAM has created one of the most extensively utilized classification systems that cover the different branches of alternative and complementary medicine. Though the therapies are classified into 5 major groups, some of them overlap.

Whole medical system – overlap with some other groups. Naturopathy, Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese medicines, and Homeopathy.
Mind-body medicine – this method follows a holistic outlook to health and fitness. It explores the interconnection between the body, mind, and spirit. It believes that the mind affects the bodily symptoms and functions.
Manipulative and body-based practice – it features movements or manipulations of different body parts, like it is performed in osteopathic and chiropractic manipulation.
Biologically based practice – this method employs various substances obtained from nature like foods, vitamins, herbs, and different natural materials.
Energy medicine – it deals with the verifiable and putative energy fields:

- Bioelectromagnetic- based therapies apply diverse verifiable electromagnetic fields like direct-current or alternating-current fields, pulsed fields in an unconventional method.

- Biofield therapies influence the energy field that supposedly surrounds and penetrates the body. Until now no proof has been unearthed that verifies the presence of these supposed energy fields around human body.

Alternative medicine is an interesting approach to medical treatment. Though the doctors may not agree with it, many people consider it to be an effective healing procedure.

Complementary & Alternative Medicine treatments for Diabetes

Consider a war strategy, if we use only land force for the war then the success chance is low. But if we utilize all the forces all together, that is using Air Force, Land Force (Land Warfare), and navy (water) force. Then the success change will be very high or almost confirmed. Similarly for disease (consider as war) instead of using single method of treatment (one defence force) if we use complementary medicines (combine all the defence forces) the result will be amazing.

Complementary & Alternative Medicine (CAM)

Going to the doctor is not like it used to be. In olden times doctors visits were more personalized and in depth. Now traditional medicine is very impersonal and doctors send you home with up to 5 prescriptions that you need to start taking right away. The only problem is you will return next week because of all the side affects that you have from all the medicine the doctor prescribed you in the first place and your original problem still won’t be solved. Unfortunately, the reason behind all the new prescriptions is because of all the kickbacks that doctors get for prescribing them. Although, these medications don’t help the patients and will undoubtedly cause more symptoms. So many Americans have started looking towards complementary and alternative medicine.

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is a group of diverse medical practices that are not generally accepted by conventional medicine, conventional medicine being medicine practiced by an M.D., D.O., psychologist, registered nurse, or physical therapist. This group of medicine is continually changing and types of medicine are very broad, however the ultimate goal of this type of medicine is find whole body health and wellness. The principals and guidelines for each individual type of CAM although diverse are based on holistic properties, whereby treating the body as a whole and resolving the underlying problems are far more important in the long run rather than just reducing the symptoms.

CAM involves the connection between the mind and body and not only relieves symptoms but works to resolve the underlying problems as well. Although, used in conjunction with one another, complementary and alternative medicines are two completely different groups of medicine. Complementary medicine unlike its cohort is used in conjunction with traditional medicine. Therefore the treatment or medicine complements conventional means of resolving pain, disease or illness. Where as alternative medicine, is used in place of conventional medicine to promote self-healing, and preventative medicine.

In the past, CAM was not accepted due to its lack of scientific basis and evidence. However, because many CAM practices are deeply rooted in Eastern history and are based upon traditional medicine, folk knowledge, and spiritual beliefs people are now turning to this type of medicine. Not to mention that patients are seeing and feeling results from CAM. There is no greater influence than someone else’s testimonial, which is causing the rise in CAM. Western medicine, although still hesitant, is just beginning to use some alternative medicines as complements to their conventional methods. Additionally insurances have turned the corner and started allowing several alternative medicines as part of their covered benefits. That’s not to say that CAM is completely accepted by the medical community, it is a long way off. However it has opened the door for new approaches to healing some of which are old ideas with new methods.

Due to the diversity of available CAM’s, it is easier to group them together to understand what type of medicine and treatment is rendered. The categories include natural products, mind-body medicine, and manipulative and body-based practices. Natural products include a variety of herbal medicines, vitamins, minerals and other “natural products”. Products considered natural can include dietary supplementation, herbal or botanical, and probiotics. Mind-body medicine focuses on the connection between the mind and the body to heal and promote health. These practices include meditation, yoga, acupuncture, deep-breathing, guided imagery, hypnotherapy, and tai chi. Lastly manipulative and body-based practices focus on the body systems and their structures. Spinal manipulation from chiropractic care and massage therapy are two commonly used body-based practices.

Before you choose a CAM it is best to research and ask your friends and coworkers for suggestions. It is normal to be nervous or apprehensive because it is not mainstream, however with the popularity and growth that it continues to receive, CAM’s are the next group of conventional medicine.
